چکیده

In a recent article, “Logical Consequence and Natural Language,” Michael Glanzberg claims that there is no relation of logical consequence in natural language (2015). The present paper counters claim. I shall discuss Glanzberg’s arguments show why they don’t hold. further how may be used to rather support the existence language.

On a logical formalization of natural language

A description of natural language (NL) has been an objective of linguistic theory since Antiquity. In the recent decades the attempts at a systematic description have been injected by the formalizing mode of scientific thinking which has been influencing more or less all branches of science since the beginning of the present century. The formal description of natural language has proven itself ...

Logical Consequence and Logical Expressions

The pretheoretical notions of logical consequence and of a logical expression are linked in vague and complex ways to modal and pragmatic intuitions. I offer an introduction to the difficulties that these intuitions create when one attempts to give precise characterizations of those notions. Special attention is given to Tarski’s theories of logical consequence and logical constancy. I note tha...

A Logical Language for Natural Language Processing

We present a formal description of a logical language that is based on a propositional semantic network. Variables in this language are not atomic and have potentially complex structure. We start from the individual components of a semantic network system, atomic nodes and relations that connect nodes, and provide a complete speci cation for the structure of nodes and a subsumption procedure be...

The Tractatus on Logical Consequence*

THE TRACTATUS ON LOGICAL CONSEQUENCE José L. Zalabardo ABSTRACT: I discuss the account of logical consequence advanced in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus. I argue that the role that elementary propositions are meant to play in this account can be used to explain two remarkable features that Wittgenstein ascribes to them: that they are logically independent from one another and that their components re...

Logical Consequence

Introduction Whenever one asserts a claim of any kind, one engages in a commitment not just to that claim itself, but to a variety of other claims that follow in its wake, claims that, as we tend to say, follow logically from the original claim. To say that Smith and Jones are both great basketball players is to say something from which it follows that Smith is a great basketball player, that s...
